Newest houseplant obsession

Forgive me if I am late to the party. Do you already know about Hoya plants?

These plants are known for being so easy to care for and live for a very long time. They get big and bushy but also have lovely trailing vines that will eventually grow clusters of little fragrant flowers. They are also called the “wax plant” because their leaves are thick and waxy.

Last year, I unknowingly purchased my first Hoya plant (see above). I found it at Home Depot for $14.99! I loved its speckled dark waxy leaves. At the time I had no idea that there were so many other varieties and colors, but thanks to instagram, I do now. My favorites are the ones with the variegated pink and white leaves.

In general, these plants like a lot of bright, indirect light, but the darker ones tend to be a bit more forgiving in medium light environments. All members of this plant family enjoy a bit of humidity, but you can let them dry out between waterings. With that said, never over-water or let them sit in a pool of water- they will rot. I water mine about twice a week with my other houseplants. I fertilize mine with a granular fertilizer maybe twice a year. If you notice slow growth, try moving it to a sunnier spot.

These plants are made for hanging baskets, but do well in regular pots as long as they have a place for their long tendrils. Some people train the vines into different shapes, or train them up a small trellis. Whatever you do, don’t trim the tendrils because this is where the flowers form.

Yesterday I went to my favorite fancy garden center and found a beautiful Hoya Krimson Queen plant that is already in flower. I tried to walk away, but my plant lust got the better of me and home with me it came. For now, I have it hanging in my sunroom, but will have to move it once winter comes.

I hear these plants are easy to propagate but I have not tried yet. When I do, I’ll let you know. For now, if you are in the market for a new houseplant, I highly recommend these fabulous plants, even for those of you without a green thumb. If you live nearby and want a cutting, I’m happy to share!
